Friends of KUSF -- Proposed Goals for 2007 and Notes

Draft, February 5, 2007

I -- PROPOSED GOALS for 2007

· Goal : Establish FoKUSF as an advocacy and support agency with a five- to seven-person oversight and operational board.

· Goal: Agree on 2007 goals, meeting schedule, committees, etc.

· Goal: Adopt bylaws and membership policy (see below); seek out and receive fiscal sponsorship or 501(c)(3) status to enable tax-deductible donations; announce FoKUSF generally to the station and the university.

· Goal: Develop 2007 fundraising plan, including grants, sponsorships and benefits; convene Board and Membership to refine and implement fundraising plan.

· Goal: Negotiate a first right of refusal on behalf of volunteers in the case of a potential sale of the station (see below for notes).

· Goal: Develop other funding to support FoKUSF's activities, including, perhaps, a monthly stipend for a paid executive or operations position.

II -- A NOTE ON MEMBERSHIP

Keeping in mind the ad hoc nature of this early venture, I propose the following two initial involvement levels:

· Board: A body of five to seven individuals that provides the formal legal structure, hold the meetings, draws up the goals, keeps the bank account, writes checks, creates action committees, etc. Appointed or elected?

· Member: Membership is open to any KUSF volunteer in good standing who has served as a regular cultural producer [define "regular"], or has completed their New Music graveyard shift requirements and at least one regular New Music shift [or the equivalent in department volunteering]. Members help propose and organize benefits, assist with FoKUSF operations, and vote on disbursement of certain funds[?] and [boardmembers?/up to three board positions?].

III -- A NOTE ON THE POTENTIAL SALE OF KUSF

A stable relationship with the University of San Francisco is vital for KUSF-FM's growth, well-being and sustainability as an information and cultural resource serving local, regional and, in the Internet era, national and global communities.

With the recent bid by KQED to purchase the KUSF-FM broadcast license, we recognize the importance of advocating for the station's volunteers and staff, and for the extended community of listeners, performers, artists, musicians, authors, students, educators, community workers, nonprofits, businesses and diverse neighborhoods that depend on KUSF's unique, grassroots, commercial-free service.

For this reason, Friends of KUSF seeks first right of refusal for any proposed sale of the station to any party. Any potential sale should trigger a period of review of no less than three months during which FoKUSF can decide whether or not to exercise that right.
